POP3 Setup for Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 5+

To configure Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express versions 5 and up to use your LaniCom.NET email account, follow the directions below.  The configuration steps for both Outlook Express and Outlook are nearly identical.

1.  Click on "Tools" in the file menu, and then select "Accounts" as shown below.

Outlook Express 1

2.  In the Internet Accounts property sheet, select the "Mail" tab, and then add a new mail account by clicking on the "Add" button as shown below.

Outlook Express 2

The "Internet Accounts" properties sheet will appear.

  • Begin by typing a value into the "Display Name" text box.  You may enter anything you want here, such as you full name.  Click "Next" to continue.
  • In the next properties sheet, enter the full email address of the account being set up.  Be sure to include the parts before and after the @ symbol.  Click "Next" to continue.

The next property sheet is where you will specify the email servers to send and receive mail from. Type the names of the POP3 and SMTP servers as you see below.

  • Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server:  pop3.lanicom.net
  • Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:  smtp.lanicom.net

Click "Next" to continue.

Outlook Express 3

After clicking "Next", the wizard will bring you to the properties sheet to where email account information is entered so our mail servers can identify your account to send and receive email.

  • In the "Account Name:" text box, enter your full email address.  It is really important to include the parts before and after the @ symbol.
  • Enter your password in the "Password" text box.
  • Remember, passwords are case-sensitive!  Click "Next" to continue.

Outlook Express 4

After the email account information has been filled out, you are almost ready to finally begin using your new email account!  The last step is as follows:

  • After finishing the wizard, Outlook should bring you right back to the Internet Accounts property sheet.  If not, just repeat step 1 to locate your new account configuration.
  • Once you have located your account, highlight the account and select "Properties"

After selecting "Properties", Outlook will bring you to a new properties sheet with five tabs, "General", "Servers", "Connection", "Security", and "Advanced".  In these tabs are all the account information that the wizard previously filled out for you.  We need to make two small changes in here.

Outlook Express 5

To finalize your account settings:

  • Select the "Servers" tab.
  • At the bottom of this property sheet, make sure the check box for "My server requires authentication" is selected.  By default, both versions of Outlook generally do not have this selected.  This is very important, because our mail servers will not allow you to send email if the check box is not selected.
  • Click settings, and confirm that the radio button "Use the same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected.
  • Click "OK", then select the "Advanced" tab.
  • At the bottom of this property sheet, make sure the check box for "Leave a copy of messages on the server" is selected.  By default, both versions of Outlook generally do not have this selected.  Then select the check box that says "Remove from server when deleted from 'Deleted Items'".  This will ensure that a copy of your emails will be kept on our servers until you delete them from Outlook. (This is very useful if you ever use our webmail feature.)
  • Click "OK", and then click "Close" on the next window.

Congratulations.  You have successfully setup Outlook to send and receive emails with your LaniCom.NET email account.  If you are still unable to send or receive emails, or if you are having other issues, please feel free to contact us.
